My Approach
Therapy is a highly personal process. Each individual, couple, or family brings to therapy their lived experience and unique set of challenges. At the same time, no matter the client, therapy always includes certain themes like the need for safety and the wish for happiness. I approach each client with the understanding they are both unique yet equally defined by the wants and needs we all share.
How I work
In therapy, I work with clients to establish a safe and trusting partnership where they can get to know themselves on a deeper level and begin to take more control of their lives. This process may include education on coping skills and the latest attachment research, role-playing more assertive communication strategies, or examining how past experiences affect our present beliefs and actions. Because no two people are the same, what therapy looks like will vary, but it is always collaborative and adjusted based on a client's needs.
As a therapist, I call upon my training, education, and personal experience as a client to guide each therapeutic process. While I employ a number of strategies and techniques based on a client's goals and needs, I most often position myself as a relational therapist, meaning I work with clients to explore how our relationship may mirror other relationships in their lives. In doing so, clients get to safely examine how they view themselves and others and can begin to identify which of their beliefs, expectations, and patterns of relating prevent them from living more of the life they want.
How long therapy takes can depend on the specific goals and concerns of each client. No matter the circumstances bringing someone to therapy, I operate with the belief every person has within them the inner resources to meet life’s challenges. This may be hard to see when you first begin therapy, but I’ve had the privilege of witnessing creativity and strength in all my clients.
My experience
I am trained in several evidence-based therapeutic disciplines and styles, which are listed below, and have supported clients from varied walks of life. I have counseled individuals and families through grief and loss, familial discord, relationship struggles, anxiety, depression, low self-worth, and trauma. I’ve worked in a family service agency, private practice, and a high school care center. I hold a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University of Los Angeles and a Bachelor of Science from Boston University and am engaged in ongoing trainings on the latest attachment research and neuroscience.
Having been in therapy myself, I know what it’s like to struggle and to feel hopeless and stuck. I also know what it’s like to grow and heal through therapy, and it would be my honor to help you on your journey of healing and growth.
